Inaugurata nel 2025, torna poi la sezione Soul and skin, dedicata all’evoluzione dello skincare.

From distribution channels to the customers. The evolution of research fragrances

The evolution of distribution, with multibrand fashion retailers and concept stores playing an increasingly strategic role, alongside changing consumer behavior, marked by the arrival of younger generations and the growing influence of cross-disciplinary figures such as designers and architects alongside traditional fragrance connoisseurs, has reshaped the world of niche perfumery. Pitti fragranze has recognized and embraced this profound transformation, evolving beyond its original format to position itself as a forward-looking event for the sector. «At the beginning, we spoke of artistic perfumery, today we prefer the term research perfumery», Antonio Cristaudo, chief sales and development officer of Pitti immagine, told MFF. «Over the past ten years, the sector has undergone a radical transformation. Distribution has evolved significantly, with this type of product entering department stores, concept stores and even design shops. The real turning point», Cristaudo continued, «came when niche perfumery opened up to the younger market. Until 10 to 15 years ago, a young consumer’s first luxury purchase was typically a pair of sneakers. Today, sneakers and fragrances go hand in hand, representing young people’s first entry point into luxury spending. For us, it has been essential to accompany the market through this transformation». Much has changed since the event was launched 24 years ago. One of the most significant milestones was the move from the Limonaie of Palazzo Corsini to Stazione Leopolda in 2009, a relocation that allowed the number of exhibitors to expand. The edition opening today and running through Sunday will host more than 260 brands, 75% of which come from abroad. «France has always been Italy’s counterpart in terms of the number of participating brands», Cristaudo explained. «Over the years, however, other markets have become increasingly prominent. This edition will feature 14 Korean brands, 14 German brands, as well as first-time participants from Eastern Europe, India and even one label from Africa». The central theme of the 2026 edition is Care, encompassing protection, research, attitude, and intuition, symbolized by the iris flower, the event’s official emblem. Last year, the event welcomed 2.200 buyers, including 550 international visitors. Thanks to the support of Italy’s Ministry of Foreign affairs and International cooperation and the Ice-Italian trade agency, international attendance is expected to grow further. «What matters is not so much increasing visitor numbers, but ensuring the quality of buyers at a time when the market is becoming increasingly polarized and requires targeted strategies», Cristaudo emphasized. «Fashion buyers have grown significantly and now account for around 10% of the total. In the early years, we had to invite menswear buyers because they had little interest in fragrances. Today, they ask to attend because research fragrances have become an important part of their business, bringing customers into the store». One of the event’s key sections is Spring, the area dedicated to emerging talent. «It is the incubator for new brands. We support them over the course of three editions, with the hope that they will eventually spread their wings», Cristaudo noted. Following its successful debut in 2025, the Soul and skin section, dedicated to the evolution of skincare, returns this year with twice the exhibition space. «Compared to last year, the area has doubled in size. We expect around 25 to 30 skincare brands gathered in a single space». Among the exhibitors will be four Korean skincare brands, participating as part of a project developed in collaboration with the Kocca-Korea creative content agency. The event also continues to strengthen its ties with the fashion industry through the participation of special guest Niccolò Pasqualetti, making his debut in the fragrance sector. Visitors will also enjoy an extensive program of talks and panel discussions. «One of the characteristics that has distinguished us from other trade fairs is our combination of research, artistic installations, and panel discussions», Cristaudo concluded. «There is a common thread that represents the true added value of Fragranze. Buyers recognize our ability to present proposals that create new opportunities within the market. A blend of research and innovation». (all rights reserved)
