From the New York stock exchange to the Milan stock exchange, from Middle-East stock exchange to South American listings. MF Fashion has utilized the Milano Finanza intelligence unit database to consolidate all global fashion and luxury stocks into a single and comprehensive index, introducing the inaugural «MFF Luxury stock index», analyzing the performance of over 70 listed companies across the world’s stock markets, from luxury groups like Lvmh and Kering to sportswear giants such as Nike and Adidas, fast fashion retailers like Inditex and H&M, and beauty companies like L’Oréal, Estée Lauder and Shiseido, as well as e-commerce platforms as Zalando and Farfetch. The top 10 companies in terms of revenue, ebitda, and market capitalization, as well as those with the highest stock price growth over the past year, can be identified. Topping the list as a global fashion and luxury powerhouse is, not surprisingly, the Lvmh group, with 2022 revenues of almost 79,2 billion euros, an ebitda of 27,2 billion, and a market capitalization of approximately 371,5 billion.

Aligned within the orbit of the French conglomerate led by entrepreneur Bernard Arnault and listed on Euronext Paris since February 6th, 2012, are fashion houses such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Fendi, Celine, Loewe and Berluti, along with champagne brands including Moët&Chandon, Krug, Veuve Clicquot and Dom Pérignon, as well as high-end jewelry manufacturers Bulgari and Tiffany & Co., beauty retailer Sephora, and five-star hotels and resorts branded Belmond and Cheval blanc. High-end sportswear and beauty have in general generated the highest sales and profitability, with companies like Kering, Richemont, Nike, L’Oréal, Estée Lauder constantly leading the sector. Fast fashion giants such as Inditex and H&M have also carved out a significant space for themselves. EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear giant led by Italian manager Francesco Milleri, remains a consistent presence in the global top 10. Following the merger between Essilor and Luxottica in 2018, the company is now listed in France.

Nike with 41,7 billion and L’Oréal with 38,2 billion euros dominate the 2022 revenue ranking, following the Lvmh group. German sportswear company Adidas, which trades shares on the Frankfurt stock exchange, takes the sixth place with 22.5 billion. L’Oréal Paris, the transatlantic beauty conglomerate, manages licensed cosmetics for well-known brands including Armani, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent, in addition to its own brand, ranks second in terms of ebitda with 9,32 billion, closely behind Zara’s parent company Inditex, founded by Spanish entrepreneur Amancio Ortega and currently led by his daughter Marta, listed in Madrid, with ebitda of 7,28 billion euros. The French reign in market value with Lvmh, L’Oréal, and historic Maison Hermès leading the pack, valued at 371,5 billion, 216,6 billion and 195,2 billion euros, respectively, on the Paris stock exchange, as of September 8th, when the markets closed. In Tokyo, the Fast retailing group owner of Uniqlo, registered over 67,8 billion euros, also shining by capitalization.

Although the top 10 companies ranked by revenue, ebitda, and market cap seem similar, the ranking based on equity performance is more diverse. US company Abercrombie & Fitch, with a market capitalization of 2,5 billion euros on the Nyse, leads the top 10 with a record annual increase of 230,8 percentage points at the end of the stock market session on September 8th. Pandora, a Danish jewelry brand renowned for its silver charms, secured second place with a 70% increase in shares to 8,64 billion on the Copenhagen stock exchange in just 12 months. Similarly, the Coty stock, which is listed in New York and recently completed a dual listing on the Paris stock exchange, ranked fourth with a value exceeding 9 billion euros after increasing by 68,7% in one year.

In September’s world ranking of the top ten best-performing stocks, two Italian companies also secured positions. Specifically, Ovs ranked sixth and Brunello Cucinelli claimed the tenth spot. The Venetian group, led by manager-entrepreneur Stefano Beraldo, experienced a 46,7% rise in market capitalization, reaching 638 million euros within twelve months. The Ovs group consists of various brands, including Ovs kids, Piombo, Upim, Les copains and Stefanel. The fashion house in Solomeo, named after the Umbrian designer, also reported a 40.4% increase, resulting in a value of nearly 5 billion euros. Chow Tai Fook jewellery, a Hong Kong-based and-listed Chinese company, ranks seventh with a market cap of almost 13,5 billion, representing a growth of 44,5%. This result is slightly better than that of Hermès, a luxury fashion brand based in Paris, which had a +44% growth and secured the third position in the top 10 by market cap, as previously mentioned. Finally, the California-based clothing and accessories brand Guess ranks ninth having increased by 41.9 percentage points on Wall street, boasting a capitalization of over 1,15 billion euros.
