Glam slam for Michael Kors

An ode to New York and its ability to react. The American designer cites the Big Apple’s resilience by looking to the early 90s in terms of style and women. He brings to the stage a casting of tops from Malgosia to Karmen Pedaru, from Natasha Poly to Irina Shayk

The final of Michael Kors's fall-winter 2022/23 show

«New York is the most resilient city existing». Michael Kors starts talking about his collection from his inspiration and passion for the city that welcomed him and turned him into a star. «Let us think of the Aids pandemic in the early 90s, but also of the 9/11 events that affected New York. It felt like the world was going to end but people wanted to move forward. To react, celebrate, dress up, go out». Like today, «in which even to go out for a pizza, you have to make reservations and you see people dressed up». Back to glam, Hollywood-style but also reduced to the bare minimum. A basic glamour combining with the comfort of jersey, soft fabrics, egg-shaped, oversized coats to be clasped with your hands, like a diva not wanting to reveal the dress she has underneath.

Starting with a workhorse, the neutrals, dominated by the camel tone. Sock boots rising high, geometric dresses, large tote bags, hoods and jumpsuits. Prince of Wales check for the fitted suits uncovering the legs, fur free but wide furry coats with an eco-soul, male suits and coats worn over evening dresses being a hymn to the thousand lights of New York. Or to a starry sky populated by the women loved by Michael Kors. «I thought of the models of the 90s, those who made us fall in love. I even called some of them for the show», the designer added, who went on stage in front of a parterre that made the photographers' flashes go crazy.

In the front row, the eternally pretty Brooke Shields, former Gossip girl Blake Lively, New York mayor Eric Adams and Luisa Ranieri, the Italian actress who starred in Paolo Sorrentino's The hand of God, nominated for the 2022 Oscars. But also, digital queens such as Chiara Ferragni and Addison Rae. And while the Grammy-winner singer and dancer Miguel was performing live, with a repertoire that also quoted Prince, a concentration of femininity from social blockbusters appeared on the catwalk: Gigi and Bella Hadid, for starters, then Irina Shayk and Emily Ratajkowski, and how to forget Malgosia, Natasha Poly, Karmen Pedaru, Caroline Trentini, Isabeli Fontana. A true Glam slam, as Prince himself sang.

Judgment. New York calls and Michael Kors answers. It is perhaps not one of the brightest moments for the American metropolis, which seems to be less hectic during these days of fashion shows. Therefore, the designer wants to give the city new energy, life and hope with a love letter composed by his most beloved things: his nightlife style, the appeal of an it-girl, the look of a jet setter and the women who still make you dream.
