With a turnover of 207 million euros, Canali is moving forward in its international expansion, particularly focusing on Eastern markets, while simultaneously enhancing its new store concept. This initiative, which began two years ago with a revamp of the New York store, has now made its way to Milan. This Friday, the menswear Brand will host a cocktail event at its boutique on Via Verri 1-3, combining art and fashion through a collaboration with Linda Carrara. Her artworks will be showcased in the fully renovated 500-square-meter space.

The Made in Italy company, which employs 1,400 people and operates five production centers in Italy, enjoys a global presence in 100 countries and plans to expand further in the short to medium term, particularly in China and India. Stefano Canali, the president and ceo of the company that recently joined Altagamma and a representative of the third generation of the family, shared insights into the xompany’s future plans with MFF ahead of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the foundation.

What are your turnover targets for 2024?

We closed the past 12 months with a turnover of 207 million euros, marking a 10% increase. We aim to replicate this growth performance this year (thus reaching approximately 228 million euros, ed.).

You are celebrating the revamp of the boutique on Via Verri in Milan this Friday...

Yes, it underwent a complete renovation that required several months of intensive work and was centered on the implementation of our new store concept. Apart from revising the layout for better use of space, we have introduced a vip lounge to further enhance the repositioning of our offering from a lifestyle perspective, which we are promoting not only through our products but also through our stores. Our aim is to be recognized not only as experts in high-quality outerwear but also to convey a stylistic narrative across all categories.

How do you perceive Milan in the current historical moment?

Milan is thriving. It is still capitalizing effectively on the momentum generated by Expo 2015 and the renewal of Porta Nuova, which has propelled the city to new heights. Furthermore, it has been unaffected by media hype and has seen improvements in all sectors. It remains an important city for discerning customers and those with a cosmopolitan mindset.

Do you plan to extend the new concept to other stores?

Our restyling operation began two years ago with the Madison Avenue store in New York and has since expanded to other locations in China. The next renovation will be in the US, where we plan to revamp the Beverly Hills store later this year.

Do you have any store openings planned?

After our recent opening in Mumbai, we will inaugurate a store in Wuhan, China, in June, followed by another opening in New Delhi in September.

What are the key markets you are focusing on for growth?

Our international markets contribute over 90% of our turnover. North America accounts for 50% of our revenue, with the Asia-Pacific region contributing another 20%. This leads us to pursue a dual growth strategy and further development for both regions, with a particular focus on medium-term investments in Greater China, where we operate approximately 40 stores, more than half of which are directly managed.

This year marks the Company’s 90th anniversary. What does this milestone mean, and how will you celebrate it?

We will celebrate this occasion during Milan Fashion Week in June, with further details to be announced soon. We are immensely proud and pleased. This milestone bears significant responsibility for preserving the values and achievements of our rich history and heritage.

Are you considering bringing in partners or funds?

Currently, there are no such plans. We remain a family-owned business with a managerial structure. We are completely focused on ourselves and our strengths.

You have been producing “Made in Italy” since 1934. Do you believe it is still an added value?

Absolutely, and even more so in the future. Made in Italy is synonymous with beauty and quality craftsmanship. Our commitment to sustainability extends across various aspects of our operations. We prioritize our employees’ well-being by providing legal, social, and healthcare protections, along with ongoing training. Moreover, ethical production practices and fair treatment of artisans underscore our commitment to human welfare. Our garments are designed to be durable and repairable, aligning with the principles of circular fashion. Our production model, with 70% completed in-house and the remaining 30% outsourced to trusted Italian suppliers, highlights a vertically integrated supply chain over which we maintain complete control.

Do you believe the government is doing enough to safeguard Made in Italy?

There is always room for improvement. It is crucial for industry representatives and associations to engage in effective conversations with the Government in order to preserve the foundational values of our sector, which contributes significantly to the nation’s prosperity. (All rights reserved)
