EnglishAldo Carpinteri’s Modes will be listed within three years
Jefferies is tasked with finding a partner to take over a minority stake in the retailer. «In december we will open in London, in 2024 in the Us. Once we reach 50 million in ebitda, we will think about the stock market,» the founder anticipated to MFF, who has China in the plans with a partner
A new era has dawned for retail. And Modes is riding the wave, racing from London to the Us, which it will approach in three stages, boosting stores in Paris and Milan and betting on an alternative omnichannel approach. In the meantime, the approximately 130-million-revenue company has hired Jefferies to find the right partner to accelerate growth with the goal, within the next three years of landing on the stock exchange. A goal that will not be the end of a road, as the retailer’s founder and owner, Aldo Carpinteri, explained to MFF.
«After the Us there is China, for which we will need a partner, but we will have to be fast, as we want to keep moving fast». Speed is the key word for the Trapani-born entrepreneur. It is on this wavelength that Modes, which «has changed three times,» is developing and evolving.
What do you mean by this?
It has changed three times because today’s Modes was born five years ago in Milan, where I opened a store in a building that housed several brands. Before that it had another name related to my mother’s boutique. Today it is a kind of omnichannel club of different people. We are a collection of dreamers, about 180 employees, but with seasonal and outsiders we also reach 250 people. For us, fashion is a club of people who want to launch a concept, a vision.
How do you differ from other retailers?
Over the years we have structured ourselves, doing everything on our own feet. Today our strategy is working, even though we are looking around to accelerate, starting with the planned opening in London for next December. This year we will again present an ebitda that will exceed 10 million euros on about 130-140 million in sales. We will close the budget on February 28, and ebitda should be around 10%.
Today retail has entered a new phase, and you call yourselves a club rather than a store. Is the era of canonical retail therefore over?
It has evolved a lot, and what we propose is a unique format, as today we represent many emerging designers who work with us and who will also present their collections at Modes, mixed with research brands and established brands. In Milan we hosted the Afro Fashion event and soon, on May 11, we will launch in Paris the Mad For Woman (m4w) capsule made exclusively for Modes.
Is fashion still going faster than before? Have customers changed a lot?
The new generation is distancing itself from the canonical concept of fashion, since they have a very different idea of what is really cool. We ourselves find that today, as opposed to what used to be the case, the daughters shop first at Modes followed then by their mothers who want to dress like them.
You mentioned the upcoming opening in London. What projects do you have in the pipeline in retail?
We are following a specific path. The Paris store, which is the first European capital, showed us that the format works, so we decided to open in London, which I am convinced will perform even better than Paris because London is much faster. In December we will have 1,000 square meters between New bond street and Conduit street, a total of 14 storefronts in the heart of London shopping. And then we will enter the Us by touching on New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. The success in Paris has shown us that the project is replicable. So far it has been just us with our club, I am the sole owner, but we are considering divesting a minority stake.
Do you already have suitors for this stake?
We have been thinking about bringing in a minority shareholder and our advisor Jefferies is already dealing with several interested figures, but we have to do due diligence since the whole front row of Modes holds stock options. We had made a business plan that we revised recently, because everything is changing quickly, and we have certified numbers that are excellent. The company is earning. The concept works, and now we can boost it, but in order to do that we need an injection, an increase in share capital.
What other goals would you be able to accomplish with a partner?
We have an international vision, but we need a partner to accompany us on this journey. After the Us, there is China, and we need a partner for it. We want to be fast, and we do not want to slow down too much. This concept works: it is fast, green, and based on people. It has to go on like this, we have to move fast.
Did you consider a listing?
We are working exactly on that. The plan is to go public within the next three years. Until two years ago it seemed like a dream, but now everything we do gives us reason to believe we can do it. However, the Stock exchange is a three-year project. After opening in London, we expect to reach 30-35 million in ebitda , and after entering the Us, a move planned for 2024, we should get to 50 million. We are still deciding where to open first between New York and Miami, we are looking for a location in the design districts.
As anticipated by MFF, you have recently expanded your Milan store. What other plans do you have for it?
Milan is a real laboratory, an immense space that occupies three streets around Piazza risorgimento. We are now going to work on the square in front of it, which we overlook with many shop windows. We already collaborate with a florist and have the management of all flowerbeds, but we are thinking of doing something else as well, and there are several possibilities, including a collaboration with an artist specialized in glassmaking. However, I cannot reveal more for now.
Do you also have other initiatives planned?
We will soon launch Modes signature objects, which does not exclude that there will be collaborations with important architects or young, research-based designers. Then, we are enhancing our approach to sustainability. We recycled the installations from the Salone del mobile held in Milan for the furniture of the store of Avenue montaigne, Paris. One of our three stores in Portofino will be dedicated to Jacquemus proposals.
What about the digital level?
Modes’ digital, which we are already working on, will simply be the store, but digitalized. Since the online business does not work, but the store does, all we need to do is to digitalize our physical space. A store such as the one in Paris has exceeded 10 to 12 million in sales thanks to multichannel in just a year and a half, with an assortment that is also seen by all the Application Programming Interfaces (api) connections, including Farfetch.
You are essentially ushering in a new retail era in which the store becomes an omnichannel club with drifts closely related to Artificial Intelligence.
What is certain is that, every year, this company gets much, much better than the previous one. We can bet on anything, the important thing is to constantly keep setting new goals. (All rights reserved)
