Wimbledon Fashion Week

From Gucci to Ralph Lauren, David Beckham to Chiara Ferragni, the 45-million-pound tennis tournament saw some of the biggest brands parading on the court and in the stands: Kate Middleton in Balmain and Jannik Sinner’s Gucci duffel bag, while Berrettini sports BOSS and Djokovic Lacoste

Last match for the Wimbledon finalists, a victory contested by both players and fashion brands, who have been battling it out over the past few weeks in style serves. If we need to wait to know who will win the 2.35-million-pound prize (up 17.5% from 2022), the winner in the fashion field of the third Grand Slam tournament can already be decreed.

Among the contending brands of the noble Brit championship, which this year recorded a record total value of 44.7 million pounds, Ralph Lauren certainly stands out, as the Us designer was the first to collaborate with the organizers of the sporting event, for which he has been the official supplier since 2006, dressing all match officials, from referees to ball boys. The uniforms were redesigned last year celebrating the brand’s aesthetic while still respecting Wimbledon’s heritage and with a focus on sustainability. In addition to being one of the event’s official partners along with Rolex, the brand was chosen by many of the guests as well who flocked to the stands of the grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club.

Starting with David Beckham, who sported a cream-colored suit from the Us brand during the third day of the championship, completing the look with a brown tie and matching clutch bag. His example was also followed by Sienna Miller, Alexa Chung, Lila Moss (Kate’s daughter, ed.), Chiara Ferragni, and Emma Corrin.

On the other hand, Kate Middleton’s look for the first appearance made social media go crazy. The Princess of Wales, sitting next to the champion Roger Federer, chose to pay homage to the tournament by wearing its official colors, opting for a 1980s look, a white pleaded skirt paired with a mint green blazer by Balmain, on which she pinned the purple bow symbolizing her role as patron of the club.

While the future Queen dictated style from the stands, a revolution was underway on the pitch. As of this year, in fact, the strict dress code imposed on tennis players, which calls for total white attire, has undergone an exception, allowing women to wear dark shorts for the first time. However, Jannik Sinner also wanted to make his own contribution to the change. While Matteo Berrettini remains extremely loyal to Boss, his 21-year-old compatriot, a rising tennis star, chose to present himself with a custom-made Gucci-branded duffel bag in fabric, with leather trims and featuring the famous monogram. A true fashion moment, as well as an excellent publicity for the Kering’s Maison, for which the young tennis player was recently appointed ambassador. The choice, however, also marks a break with the Wimbledon tradition of wearing even white accessories, decorated only with the tournament logo. It also seems to be the first time that a high-end luxury bag has appeared on the courtside and, besides being a sign of how fashion and luxury are taking over the sport, it could set a precedent for future tournaments, which could see players sporting more and more designer-made accessories.
